A huge thank you, and well done to everyone involved!

Michael ready to release an arrow towards the targets

This is Michael, aged 15 from Kent who cares for his sister who has autism, a chronic bowel issue, high functioning sensory needs and motor global delay.

He helps his sister to get ready for the day and ensures she has what she needs to support her emotional wellbeing. He has little time for himself and did not previously attend any activities or clubs, therefore missing out on social interactions.

Michael’s love of archery sparked when he attended our young carer festival at Bowles where he tried it for the first time!

His Imago Support Coordinator, Sim submitted a grant application to Kent Community Foundation for a beginner’s archery course, club membership and archery equipment and was successful!

Being able to join an archery club, gives Michael respite from his caring role, improving his mental wellbeing and gives him the opportunity to enjoy a sport he has a strong interest in and has previously taken part in.

I am very happy with my new bow. It makes me feel like I don't have to miss out on something I love. Thank you so much!

Michael

Since completing the beginners course this summer, Michael has achieved:

  • 4 outdoor records
  • 2 indoor club records
  • 2nd Class classification
  • Won Junior handicap competition at the club championships
  • Archer 1st class and is getting close to Bowman 3rd class in just 6 weeks!

Just one week after completing his beginners course, Michael took part in his first club competition - head to head, Olympic style. During this competition Michael won a set against a former County Champion, and went on to beat a current County Champion in a one arrow shoot off.

I have had the pleasure of coaching Michael for the last few weeks, he is incredibly attentive and has a real talent for the sport. He is an asset to his family and to the club - we're delighted to have him aboard!

What an amazing achievement in such a short space of time! A huge well done to everyone involved, this will have a lasting impact on Michael and his family!
