There are at least 376,000 Young Adult Carers in the UK. Being a Young Adult Carer can affect a young person’s wellbeing, social life and future achievements.
Young Adult Carers (YACs) are young people aged 16–25 who care, unpaid, for a family member or friend with an illness or disability, mental health condition or addiction.
YACs are often supporting the cared for and other family members with practical tasks, physical care and emotional support, whilst at the same time establishing a life for themselves as they transition into adulthood, further education and the workplace. The additional pressure of a caring role may lead to uncertainty over how to juggle all of these pressures, resulting in the YAC putting their needs last.
At Imago, our specialised YAC Navigators provide one-to-one emotional support, advocacy, information, advice and guidance. More importantly, they offer a listening ear for Young Adult Carers to voice frustrations or explore aspirations.
Monthly groups and activities are an opportunity for YACs to meet and relax with other young people in a similar situation; with options to engage in training relevant to their own wellbeing, such as healthy eating and budgeting.
Young Adult Carers can self-refer to our service, or family members, friends or professionals can complete the form below with the agreement of the YAC.
Our YAC workers are experienced in running activities and delivering assemblies in schools and colleges. Please contact the team on 0300 011 1965 or at navigation@imago.community to find out more.
